Castor & Pollux Ultramix Adult Canine Fomula Dry Dog Food, 30-Pound Bag

i’m not sure what all they hype is with the reviews on this dog food… seems a little strange that everyone is giving it 5 stars. i switched gradually from IAMs to this food and my dog has the worst gas ever. She farts every 5 minutes! I can’t even stand to have her in the same room with me. He coat has gotten dry since I switched her food, her stool is loose – almost like ‘rhea… i mean for what this stuff costs i thought i’d found the best food ever… not impressed. Gas, dry coat, loose stool… try a small bag and see how your dog does with it.

I have a collie and always am on the lookout for good quality food for her. I don’t mind spending a little more for better products especially since my dog’s health and overall happiness is my responsibility, and this all begins with good nutrition. The quality of the dog food seems exceptional. You can see the bits of fruits and vegetables in the mix and the first ingredient is chicken. I was expecting a “meatier” smell, though, but perhaps this is due to a lack of artificial ingredients or additives that other dog food brands put in their mix to be more appealing to the dog.
My dog showed no concern for switching this food with her normal brand (Royal Canine). I switched gradually since my dog has always had a sensitive stomach. She is not a picky eater by any means and gobbles this right up. I have been feeding her straight Castor and Pollux Ultramix for about a month. The only difference I have noticed is that she goes to the bathroom more frequently than she has with other foods. Is this good or bad? I am not sure. Seems healthy to have a functional digestive system, but perhaps the food is not as digestible as I hoped. Her coat looks great and she has not displayed any signs of an upset stomach or flatulence. She seems excited to receive the food and eats it all in a single setting.
I think the food is great because it is natural, healthy and offers really good, quality ingredients. Every bowl is slightly different as well depending on the fruits and vegetables scooped during that one meal. I think this adds subtle variety as opposed to having the exact same meal day after day.
The only drawbacks (if you find them as such) that I have found is that it is very necessary to keep the food stored in an airtight container. It will dry out and fade slightly in color. I don’t think it becomes harmful but certainly looks and feels that it is not as good. I keep a large airtight container that has a small flap on the lid for scooping. Any pet store carries them like Petco or PetSmart. The only thing I found a little odd is the size of the kibbles. They are tiny like pebble-sized. I checked to make sure I didn’t accidently buy a small bites or small dog variety and it wasn’t the case. This is the standard kibble size. My dog doesn’t mind or have a problem with the tiny kibbles but she is not getting the benefit of chewing larger pieces such as scraping tarter off her teeth. I simply added bones to the mix that focus on teeth cleaning and it works just fine.

We ordered the Weight Management version of this dog food because we have two overweight long haired Dachshunds and wanted to get them to a more healthy weight. We had been feeding them canned food, a few different brands, all high quality. We wanted a dry food to help their teeth stay clean and a product with good ingredients and not a lot of corn was essential. Since Amazon doesn’t show it, here are the ingredients for the Castor & Pollux Weight Management Formula:
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, Rice, Ground Whole Oats, Ground Whole Barley, Dried Bananas, Peas, Tomato Pomace, Chicken Fat (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Ground Whole Flax Seed, Brewers Dried Yeast, Dried Potato, mono-Calcium Phosphate, Natural chicken Flavor, Dried Carrots, Dried Sweet Potatoes, Salmon Meal, Dried Egg Product, Dried Cranberries, Salt, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Carbonate, Glucosamine Hydrochloride, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E Supplement, Chondroitin Sulfate, Ferrous Sulfate, Choline Chloride, Niacin, Carnitine, Copper Sulfate, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Manganous Oxide, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Sodium Selenite, Riboflavin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Calcium Iodate, Folic Acid, Rosemary Extract,
I like that the first three ingredients are meat and that the rest look healthy. The dogs love it, and that’s the important thing. I’ll report back after a couple months on whether or not they’ve lost weight. (We’re also cutting out all the extra treats except for baby carrots and green beans.)

Base on the ingredients of the product, this is probably the best price out there. I like the weight management one in blue bag as well. To my surprise, my dog even likes the weight management flavor. Besides this good food I add some Missing Link as supplements (available here in amazon.com); my dog has shinny hair and eyes, no red tear stain, no dandruffs, and less scratching. It’s amazing what good food does to the body.

Product: I have purchased three bags of this product for my 3-year-old Cane Corso (Adopted). He loves the food; I love its nutritional value and the result on his coat and energy level.
Shipping: Until last month, the product was received in perfect condition. Then, last month it was quite the opposite. The outer box and the bag of food, itself, were broken and torn. Most of the food was spilled over the inside of the box. It was a mess. I could not find where to advise the sender (although I sent a quiry to Amzazon) of the problem. . . . .Nonetheless I am ordering another bag this month — which is a high tribute to the product. If the package is broken again, it will be my last order. . . . .It’s just not a nuisance to me; it’s a possible safety hazard to my dog.
