  2. I got these collars after my dogs got their teeth intertwined in each other’s collars more than once (they play rough). It’s not easy trying to break up up a 100lb rottweiler his 50lb companion when their both panicking & stuck together yelping. I’ve found both collars loose around the yard from time-to-time which means they had enough force to yank them off. The bummer thing is that when we try to grab them by their collars (like when someone comes to the door), the collars pop off. I fear that they’ll somehow get out of the yard and loose their collar with their tags but they are microchipped. There’s more of a chance that they get hurt or choke while no one’s home than there is for them to get out.

I’ve had Break-Away collars on both my dogs for quite some time now and they are truly life savers. My dogs are still rather rambunctious puppies, but the collars break loose only in emergency situations. It takes some getting used to attaching the leash, but it’s more than worth it.

I wish they came in more colors/designs and with silver metal instead of gold, but I’d much rather my dogs be alive and safe than fashionable.

  4. I bought one of these collars for my Bedlington Terrier. He goes to the dog park fairly often and sometimes the dogs play fairly rough, wrestling around on the ground and chasing and such. I wanted him to be safe, in case another dog accidentally got hold of his collar. Happily, I haven’t needed to test the collar under dog-play circumstances, but I can tell you the collar DOES break away when under stress. When you take your dog for a walk, you need to be careful to get your leash clipped through BOTH of the D-rings on the collar. One time I accidentally only connected one D-ring. My dog saw one of his best dog-friends and began pulling quite hard at his leash (we’re working on eliminating that problem, he’s only a puppy) and — snap! — the collar popped open and off he went. Luckily, he was fairly easily captured, but… good to know the collar does what it’s supposed to!

I bought these collars for my two lab mix dogs after we went through a near choking incident with them, where one dog had grabbed onto the collar of the other, it ended up getting caught on her lower jaw and twisting around the other dog’s neck and cinching tighter and tighter. Unfortunately, my dogs discovered with their new collars that if they pulled hard enough, they would come off, so it became their new game when they would play out in the back yard. They pulled them off so much that the safety clasp would barely hold anymore. They also chewed on the regular buckle which made it impossible to open the regular way. I have gone through two sets of these collars now, and as much as I think they are great products, they just don’t work with my dogs. The last one I bought lasted all of one day. I think if you had one rather easy-going dog, it would be fine. They just don’t hold up to the chewing/playing power of two lab/retriever mix dogs.
