Leash Training A Siberian Husky

Betty asks…
Can my Siberian Husky be trusted off leash?
My Siberian Husky is 10 weeks old. I have walked him more than twice everyday for the past 5 days and I’ve started to walk him off-leash today. He had followed me although it was not as perfect. He had troubled with distraction of going into other peoples garden and smelling other people but when he realizes Im still walking he quickly comes to follow me again. Now am I training him right to be an off-leashed dog?

Its very dangerous for your dog to be off leash around the neighborhood, even if he will come to you. All it takes is one time for him not to come to you, and he could be in danger, or in the future put somebody/ another dog in danger.
Im not saying Im 100% against having a dog off a leash. Actually, I have a 145lb mixed breed dog that we let off leash for portions of our walk. On the busy road we hold his leash, and when a car/human/ dog is approaching we also hold his leash. However, he is 6.5, over weight and heavily sedated.. So he couldnt get away from us if he tried. He just likes to go faster than we can walk in the begining of the walk- but we could easily jog and get him if he ever didnt respond. He is very well behaved though, always has been since 7 weeks old. I also let my german shepherd off leash in my front yard, but Ive worked and worked with her when it wasnt a weekend ( its a touristy town) so that she knows not to leave the yard and always comes when called.

i have a 5 month old husky and i was just wondering if anyone can answer a few questions for me, first off i was wondering how can you train a husky off leash i herd you cant but the other day my husky got off the leash and ran but then stop and waited for me to walk with her and came back when called is there hope,. also how do you stop them from biting she wont bite me but she will play bite with new people or when shes bored, also how to stop her from digging.

admin answers:
I wouldn’t trust a husky off leash. They love to run way too much. Be careful in fenced areas since they can leap fences if they are feeling determined.
For biting, when she bites pull your hand away and say no. Turn your back on her for a second or two. Then turn around and start playing again. She’ll learn that biting means she doesn’t get attention. Since she wants your attention this is a pretty effective method of training. Keep lots of chew toys around so she has a variety of appropriate chewing options.
Huskies dig. There isn’t a lot you can do about it. I’d recommend setting up a place where she can dig. When she starts digging in the wrong spot, tell her no, and take her to the right spot. When she digs there, praise her.

thank u SO much!!
she will not move when i try to walk her? i dont want to pull her along?
i tried using liver treats to walk her also, but i ill try the classes asap
thanks!

admin answers:
There is no reason to put a Siberian husky in a harness, unless you actually want it to pull something.
Put her on a regular leash and a collar. Encourage her to walk using a happy voice, or luring with an especially good treat if necessary. Praise and encourage her every step of the way — especially since she isn’t too crazy about you to begin with.
If she was left with her litter until 13 weeks old and not socialized by her breeder, her behavior is normal. She will warm up. I HIGHLY recommend getting her into a Puppy Kindergarten class to help get her socialized.

Siberian Husky Help?
I have a 10 week old Siberian husky. He’s A wonderful dog and the family loves him to death. He’s not too bad with the house training, he will usually say when he has to go or its fairly easy to predict when he needs to go out. But here are some problems i’m having with him. (i’ve done a lot of research on the breed and i know these issues are typical, just want some fresh ideas)
1. When you’re playing with him, or trying to pet him sometimes, he bites, I dont know what to do to get him to stop biting! He never bites down, its just that his little teeth are sharp.
2. Crate training-i’m trying to crate train him, but he has a bad case of separation anxiety, and when you leave him alone, he goes nuts! One time i had to leave him in there for a couple hours while we were out and I think he cried the whole 2 hours
3. leash training-any suggestions, he’s actually doing pretty good with that.
4. Discipline?
I admit, didn’t expect this behavior but i’m up for the challenge.
So many great answers ! I thank everyone for their advice, I like the variety of suggestions I got, I will try them to see what works best for him! I’ve owned many dogs but this is my first husky, its like culture shock lol.

admin answers:
1. He is teething! Get him some toys to chew on.
When he nips you a loud squeal will get his attention and he soon will know that nipping you is not on.
Start as you mean to go on!
If you let him get away with nipping you now, he will continue when older! And Siberians play VERY rough!
2) What I did to introduce mine to his crate was put a few treats in the crate and let him walk in it himself.
The crate is his safe den! Not a place for punishment!!
Let him know that the crate is a place where he can rest and get a treat or too.
Put in a toy or too as well.
3) Keep doing what you are doing if he is doing good at it.
4) The key to training a Siberian is to be firm and constant!
They will only listen to you if they respect you (and even then its not guaranteed)
The sooner you start establishing your role in the pack, the better it is for both you and your dog.
Keep at it, keep him occupied and when he is old enough enroll him in basic OB classes.

Hi,
Siberian Huskies need to be exercised 30 to 60 minutes daily to keep them from becoming bored. They make excellent jogging companions, but should not be exercised in hot weather. Surprisingly, they need only a small backyard to expend their energy. Leash training is also a must as Siberian Huskies should never be left off leash when they are not in a fenced area. They love to run and will do so without any thought of how far away you are. Here’s more info:

How does buying tickets on Fandango work? If my mom buys a ticket for my 5 year old brother to see a PG-13 movie through Fandango, will my brother be allowed to get in?
Thanks!
![]()
admin answers:
It depends. Your brother would have to go to the ticket window to get his ticket with either his mom’s credit card or if you print out the confirmation number they can retrieve it that way. The person in the booth may not give him the ticket if he is too young unless your mom is getting it with him. However, if they have the ticket kiosk where you can go and handle that without a person, just the computer, it will print the ticket out for you. Once your brother goes inside though, they may not take his ticket if he is too young and they may reject him. Usually PG-13 movies aren’t too strict, it’s the R movies. It also depends on the person if they care while they’re working or if they don’t care what happens cause they hate their job.

Husky Dog Breeds

Charles asks…
Husky or Alaskan Malamutes, good dog breeds for beginners?
yes or no?
If not are there any breeds like it which would be good for beginners?
![]()
admin answers:
Do not get either of these breeds for your first dog. They are beautiful but a husky is the closest breed to a wolf. They are not good to be kept as casual pets. They have unlimited energy, are stubborn and are hard to train. They need a firm, patient owner with plenty of time to train them correctly and exercise them regularly.
If you are wanting a bigger dog I recommend a Labrador Retriever, Goldren Retriever or German Shepherd. All three still require exercise, but these breeds in general are loyal, friendly, intelligent fast-learning companions.

admin answers:
A dog of the same weight as a wolf will have a head that is 20 percent smaller. This is a result of several factors that occurred during domestication of the animal. Dog heads vary from wolf heads in several other ways as well–they feature smaller teeth, more rounded and forward-looking eyes, and a more curved lower jaw.
I believe wolves also have longer legs, but I’m not 100% on this one. There are also a lot of wolf-dog hybrids out there remember.

Haha jk.
LABS, I don’t know much about huskies, but I own a lab mix (with pitbull I think) and she is the sweetest little thing ever. Yes, for the first 5 to 10 months, she is going to be a frisky puppy with more energy than you can ever knock out of her. But at the same time, she doesn’t really know what’s right and what’s wrong at that age, so you have to teach her, and labs learn really quickly.
1. Labs learn quickly.
2. Labs are super cute.
3. Labs are friendly dogs that no one is afraid of, so you’ll feel more secure walking them in public.
4. Labs are children friendly.
5. Labs are adult friendly.
6. Labs are natural athletes with shorter fur, so they can run with you in the heat.
7. Labs LOVE tennis balls, so if you’re tired, just throw a tennis ball for them.
8. Labs love the water, so you can go to the beach and have fun with them.
9. Labs are trusting. They love strangers and you know they won’t ever bite people (of course you have to raise them right too).
10. Labs have these soft velvet ears that are floppy and just the right length.
GET A LAB! You won’t regret it. Better yet, get a lab mix, so that it’ll have the temperament of a lab and also have its unique appearance that is different from the generic, all too common lab look. Also, mixes are more healthy (since the gene pool is more diverse).

Siberian Husky Training Questions?
Hi I’m looking into buying a husky, and I’ve done A LOT of research. But I still have a few questions..
1. Do you think I should get a puppy if I’m gone for 8 hours of the day? (to school) There would be another dog with him, who is part husky..
2. I don’t live in an enclosed area, and by the sounds of it they like to run everywhere, which I have no problem with, except that we live by the highway. My other half husky dog did not ever run away. We also don’t live in town, its in the middle of no where so it wouldn’t be getting into anything too bad lol.
3. After school, I would be with him/her the whole time until bed time, is that enough time?? And of course we would have 2 full days a week together. Enough?
Thanks in advance. Please give me any training tips for siberian husky puppies. It would be very appreciated.
Actually yes we do , my dad works at home a lot, and could always take the dog to work actually, never thought of that. there is usually someone at home. especially in the winter when he doesnt work

1) Puppies can only hold their bladder and bowels about an hour for every month they are old. An 8 week old puppy needs a chance to potty outside every 2 hours. Confining the puppy to an easy to clean surface and putting down a puppy pad is an option but I have found this makes house training much harder. The more times a puppy does his business in the house the more likely it is he will do it again.
2) I have never and will never allow my dogs off leash in an unfenced area. Even when we lived in the middle of nowhere (mountain top in New Hampshire) I just could not do it. Dogs with high prey drive including huskies may take off after game and chase mindlessly for quite a while. When they stop they can be lost miles from home. They can become food for wildlife, be shot at by idiots, hit by a car, caught in a trap, etc.. For me the chance just is not worth it.
3) Yes as long as you have the energy to exercise her.

Chris asks…
Siberian Husky Training?
We just adopted a Siberian Husky from a shelter yesterday. He is two years old and a very smart dog. He was at the shelter for a little over a month so he is a little out of sorts. We know that he has known issues of biting and at his previous home, he mostly lived outside. Here he will mainly be inside and just go outside to go potty and play. He is semi-potty trained, because of living outside all the time, he sometimes forgets and goes in the house. We are looking for the best way to address his indoor manners (jumping on the counter, chewing, etc.) and also potty training tips. I know he is a little older so its not exactly like training a puppy but we have hope because he is very smart!

admin answers:
Siberian Huskies LOVE to please their owners. However, they are a high energy, spirited, and hard headed dog. Training will be difficult. As far as potty training, limit his meals, ie: put him on a schedule. It will let you know when he is going to need to eliminate. Take up water in the evening, and let him out before bed time to help curb nighttime accidents. Crate training might also help. Get him a crate big enough to lie down, sit, and stand in. Dog’s won’t eliminate where they sleep.
For the chewing, go to PetCo/PetSmart and buy Bitter Yuk or Bitter Apple spray, and spritz it where you don’t want him chewing. It is non’toxic and will leave a bitter taste in his mouth that will deter the chewing.
For counter surfing/jumping. When he does that, use a loud, sharp uh uh! Command and remove him from the room. Eventually, he will associate the noise and removal with the behavior and stop.
If you need more, send me an e-mail at explicit_prose@yahoo.com

admin answers:
For the car: A crate
Understand that you will NOT be able to keep this dog “next to you no matter what” at the beach without a leash. Siberian Huskies are an on-lead-only breed.
So you train the dog to respond to you on-lead (i.e. Not drag you around), and you keep her on-lead. That simple. I would HIGHLY recommend that you plan on taking your new dog to obedience classes so that you can learn how to train her.
I hope you’ve done your research on the breed and realize that they are not the dog for everyone. I hope your mother realizes this, too. They need plenty of exercise, and a well-fenced, inescapable yard. They need firm, consistent training from someone they respect. They will ignore you, and they will take off if they get loose.
I sincerely hope you and your family understand all of this before you agree to take this dog.

siberian husky training session lengths / potty training question?
My little sibe Zayda is almost 8 weeks, i had got her last sat when she was 7 weeks old. I feed her by hand a little handful at a time and she only gets it when i tell her sit and she sits. i have tried telling her to sit at other times to make sure she wasnt just begging for her food and she did so i was pleased with that and let her know it, but i am wondering how long should our training session be? i want to make sure she eats all she should while learning to sit. i want to be able to better proportion how much food she gets every time she does a good job. also when should i be starting to try and get her to lay down and stay and shake a paw. i have tried to get her to sit and then stay as i slowly back up holding my hand out as a stop sign repeating stay and it almost seems like she does but then just when im about to hold my hand out to give her the food she gets up to come to me. i just want to know if im moving on too fast or if im on the right track and just need to be persistent.
As for the potty training i am wondering if i should be leaving water available to her at all times or not. Since i have brought her home i have ben leaving water out all the time as i also have 2 cats who need to drink ( the cats and zayda have ben getting along fine ). but i feel like she pees alot. for an example earlier today i thought she had to pee so i was calling her ” zayda come, go outside go potty, zayda go outside go potty” and she started to come to me but then she turned around and went for the livining room and squatted to pee i let out a loud sharp NO and brought her outside and she peed then i brought her inside after praising her and not even 15 minutes later i caught her tring to pee in the dining room. she has asked at the door to go out before so i do feel like im making progress its just kinda frustrating when that happens and i fully expected it i knew what i was getting into im just wondering if it would help the whole situation if i controlled when she gets her water rather then leaving it out all the time but i want to make sure she gets enough.

admin answers:
Siberians are not like other breeds. They are very easy to train but they need to know why they need to obey. As for training, yo train one command at a time. Anything more will confuse her. Since she knows “sit” already use that to house train her. At 2 months old she should be able to hold her functions for 2 hours. 1 hour per month in age, on average. When you go to take her outside make her sit at the door. Always use the same door. After she sits at the door, take her out. This way she will sit at the door to let you she needs to go out. When she is relieving herself, use a word for that command. I use “work”. You can train her to relieve herself on command.
When you feed her, put your hand in the food bowl and let her eat a few bites from your hand. This keeps food agression down.
Use a raw hot dog for training treats. Cut one up into tiny pieces. Train her when she is hungry. It is easier that way. Keep your sessions to around 5-10 minutes long. You can do 5-6 sessions in a day, what ever you have time for. Since she knows sit, go on to lay down. I always use “down” for this command. Hold a piece of the hotdog in your closed hand and put your hand on the ground in front of her. Tell her “down” and you may have to push her bottom down at first. Always end a training session with a command she already knows. This helps to keep things positive.
With teaching her to stay, try stepping back a step. Wait about 10 seconds then release her nad praise. I always use the words “all done” for the release. I use a pointed finger at my pup as a hand signal for stay. Gradually make her stay times longer and the distance between you farther. Be patient. If you get frustrated, take a break and play with her. Then start again.
Make her sit for everything. I make my Siberians sit before I feed them, before I play with them and before I allow anyone to pet them. If they get up they get no attention.
My current Siberian is 18 months. He is trained in verbal commands in 2 languages and hand signals. This is what he knows in hand signals and both verbal commands, sit, stay, stand, down come, quiet and all done. The rest are only verbal commands, shake, other paw, left, right, stop, hike, leave it, give, and take. He also is 100% trustworthy off leash. I can ask him to sit, then I can walk 25 yards and set his food bowl down and smoke a cigarette before releasing him. My first Siberian also as well trained except he was not trained to pull like my current one is.
I do not regulate the water availability. I do regulate the food. I eat first. Know many on this site do not like him but I suggest you watch a lot of the Dog Whisperer. Siberians have a very strong pack instinct. By reinforcing yourself as the alpha will help you a great deal. By being alpha does not make training easier or difficult, because it is not training. Only obedience training will make her obedient. Being alpha only helps you maintain your place within your pack. If she becomes the alpha you probably will have behavior issues not related to obedience.
If I missed anything you can email me. I studied under a wonderful professional handler/trainer. I did all of my dog training myself, but she did give me insights on things that needed polished with my first pup. He was already trained before I met her.

Could you give me pointers on training my siberian husky.?

“come” command. He comes to me from short distances(and for a weiner slice)Any tips would be appreciated.

admin answers:
You may want to seriously consider taking him to a “Puppy Kindergarten” type of obedience class. This is something that I highly recommend (and wish I could require) for people who take my puppies.
Getting your puppy solid on coming when called is critical with this breed. Use the treats, and never call him to you when you are going to reprimand him for something. Also remember that this breed is not reliable off-leash. They have minds of their own, and they love to run.
You’re absolutely right — Siberians do bore easily, and they need a reason to do what you ask. Praise is rarely enough. Be ready to use lots of treats while training.
Again, consider an obedience class. You’ll get lots of information and tips that are hard to convey on a message board.
Good luck!

No. My dog was randomly attacked by a White German Shepherd as we were walking down the street. For a long while I thought that the White Shepherds were different than the normals or Blacks. My vet even said that was true, that they were basically brain damaged. But I’ve met a White German Shepherd recently that was one of the most well-manners dogs I’ve seen.
There is no physical evidence to prove that the color of a dog changes its personality. Any dog can be dominant and any dog can be submissive. You just need to train it properly and socialize with other people and dogs so he/she will not have a problem.
Good luck with your future white Siberian Husky.
(Edited for input: As for the mention of inbreeding, all purebred dogs are inbred. Inbreeding was the only way to keep a dog pure back when the breed was still up and coming. These days, there is no reason to inbreed, so if the breeder you go to has any inbred dogs, do not buy.)

It is not enough to just like the breed you have to be well educated on it. I suggest to get some books and do research on Siberian huskies. They are a beautiful breed but it is not enough just to like them. Huskies are not a dog for everyone. If you get one now without properly educating yourself on the breed and then realize that it isn’t a match for you, you will be contributing to the over population of dogs in the shelters especially huskies. But as far as pricing it is from 450-800. Here are some website where you could start to research huskies. (i suggest you do more than just read these sites)

Most crucial are making sure Hips and Elbows have been certified free of dysplasia. You should be able to look up the dog’s parents certification on OFA (www.offa.org) if they are in the US. Also you’ll want to see a current (within a year) CERF certification.
You should get, at minimum a 5 generation pedigree. All dogs in that pedigree should have hip scores.
If this is your first dog, do a LOT of research. Siberian Huskies are fantastic dogs, but are not necessarily great dogs for a first time owner.
Talk at great length to the breeder. If you find the breeder intolerant of being asked questions, go elsewhere!!! A good breeder wants to sell their puppies to well-educated homes.

Charles asks…
Can Siberian Husky live comfotably in a flat?
Hi, we are planning to get a siberian husky for ourselves, we’ve read some information about the dog and are quite happy thusfar. I am planning to go jogging once a day 3-4 times a week. However during the week we work and we would have to leave the dog alone in our flat, how will the dog handle that? Can he/she be alone for long periods of time? Resources would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

Does the flat have a yard? I am upset that every answer for every husky question talks about how bad they are. They are a beautiful and wonderful breed, but you have to agree to make the commentment before buying one!! Ie…your husky may be OK with the lifestyle…..but without a fence you will have to walk him on a leash EVERY time he has to go to the bathroom or outside…they will run away….if he is not OK with the 3-4 jogs/week, trust me, he will let you know, by destroying everything you own. If you are willing to recognize this means he needs more attention or exercise and are willing to provide such, you can be a great husky owner, don’t let them tell you otherwise! But you have to adapt to the dog! That being said, my dogs are in crates sometimes 8+ hours/day (I usually come home for lunch but can’t always) and they are more or less fine – the days I don’t come home for lunch, they are crazy when I get home and need a lot of exercise and attention. Most times I leave my older one out (1.5-2 years), and she is almost always fine. It will depend on your particular dog’s personality what they will do – and start in small doses…leave for 30 minutes, 2 hours….etc until they are ready. And with this breed, I am completley convinced you will evenutally need 2 to make a pack, so be prepared for that (your sibe will let you know)
So basically, yes they can be alone for periods but be prepared to make up for it….they are very much like kids…..

Husky Training Methods

Donna asks…
How do I housetrain a siberian husky puppy?
I heard huskies take different training methods than any other dog
![]()
admin answers:
First of all you need to be in charge at all times with a high energy breed like a Husky. This means being the Alpha for your pet. Scheduled feeding times are the best way to control their potty times. What goes in must come out, so when you feed your dog at the same time every day they will have to “Go” usually within a half-hour. So make sure they are outside at this time, and praise them after the act. DO NOT EVER PUNISH YOUR DOG FOR AN ACCIDENT IN YOUR HOUSE!!!
And don’t forget to take the food away if it is not eaten. Don’t worry they won’t starve. They will learn very quickly to eat what they need while the food is available. This is the best way to potty train your dog, hands down!
YOUR HUSKY WILL ABSOLUTELY NEED LOTS OF EXERCISE OR IT WILL FIND WAYS TO LET OUT IT’S IMMENSE AMMOUNT OF ENERGY! And trust me when I say that you will not like the results of a hyperactive, undisciplined Husky. They will make up their own jobs to do and their own games to play. And doggy games are usually destructive. So take him/her for plenty of walks have them tow a wagon or wear a backpack weighted with water bottles

Carol asks…
Does clicker training work for Siberian Huskies?
I am about to get a Siberian Husky puppy and I would like to know if there are any training methods that work better than others. I have been researching the breed for over a year before deciding to get a Siberian Husky puppy.
Also, besides toys, bowls, food, crates, a collar and leash, and a brush, is there any other supplies you would recommend that I get before a bring the puppy home?

admin answers:
Siberian Huskies need a great deal of training. Start training your pup as soon as you get it home. If you start with clicker training it should work. Make sure you get a crate that will fit the pup as an adult, the wire crates have a panel to use to make the crate smaller and move it as the pup grows. They need to be a member of the pack make sure the pup isn’t left alone for more than 2 hours at a time.

Betty asks…
Alternative training methods for ‘counter cruisers’?
I have a Husky/Chow mix who’s a ‘counter cruiser’. I’m currently working with a trainer, and have been for over 8 weeks, but the problem is still strong. (Although he’s made great improvement in other areas). We’ve tried using soda can’s filled with pennies or pebbles, we’ve tried using small mouse traps, we’ve tried about 4 different brands of deterrent spray, (all under the guidance of the trainer). It doesn’t stop him, in fact, I get the impression he considers them all a game. He doesn’t counter cruise for just food either, (which I make sure not to leave out), he’ll grab just about anything, then run outside with it trying to get us to chase him. (which I don’t, to keep from encouraging the behavior, I simply wait for him to come close then grab him and take the item from his mouth). He gets a 45 to 60 minute walk in the mornings, and he spends an hour at the dog park twice a week. Anyone know of any alternative training methods I might try to deter this behavior? He’s an otherwise good dog.
The behavior is house-wide, not just the kitchen. It happens outside as well as inside. I am working with a trainer and know how to discourage him from improper behavior, this works with other behaviors. (He is well trained in other aspects). I can’t watch him 24/7 and he can’t stay in a crate 24/7. He is young, about 10 months old.

Tips on training my highstrung Alaskan Husky?
She was abused. She was beaten and the people who owned her before cut off her tail with an axe, so she is very untrusting.
I love her very much, but she’s insane and my parents won’t let her in the house because she runs around and jumps on everything and attacks my moms Lhasa Apso and she jumps on the kitchen table and counters, and even jumps on the stove!
She won’t listen to me. I tried to teach her how to sit because I had to start somewhere, but she won’t pay attention to me, everything distracts her.
Does anyone have any good training methods?
She also lived in an Amish household, so I don’t know if it’s got anything to do with that.
Oh; and I try to walk her when she gets alot of energy, but she pulls and she’s a lot stronger than me. So I’m getting her a headcollar, and hopefully that works and she won’t have so much energy.
So tips on walking are very welcome, too.

admin answers:
Huskies are very energetic and intelligent. And you are right, yours has some serious trust issues.
Helping her burn some energy will certainly help, and a gentle lead or head harness is a good option. Some huskies are taught to pull in harness but never walk on lead, so remember this is may be all new. Sit might not be the best first trick, as sitting still is not something that your dog is naturally inclined to do. You might try starting with something in motion, like walking on lead. Right now being clear in your commands and consistent. Always ask her in the same way for the same behavior. And always respond with a negative response to a negative behavior and really positively when they do what you want them to.
Training a dog is like a conversation, action – reaction, action – reaction. When your dog acts a certain way make sure you always respond the same way (positive or negative) and you are teaching your dog the conversation. If you are always consistent she will learn what to expect from you in situations and this will help earn her trust. Being unpredictable in your actions will only confuse her and make her doubt you. And do not get frustrated, stay calm, dogs can feed on our emotions. And think of this, you are actually ‘training’ your dog every minute you are together. She is always looking to you and seeing how you react to her and what she does.
Sled Dog Central has a list of ‘clubs and organizations’, and ‘mentors’ by region: see links on left. I would look for a club or mentor near you and find someone with experience training huskies, that will be very helpful.
Http://www.sleddogcentral.com/
You may be able to work with your dog to learn some more high energy activities, like canicross or bike-jor on dryland, and ski-jor on snow.

Clicker training is also a fun thing to do. And intelligent working dogs do quite well with it.

Joseph asks…
Is it possible to train a 4 year old husky to NOT chase house cats?
I adopted a 4 year old female husky and she seems to chase small forms of animals(cats and squirrels) when i’m walking her. I have some family moving into our house and they have cats, so I was wondering if it were possible to train her to think of them as part of our pack or is it too late?
If it is possible, would somebody explain a method in training her? Thank you.
![]()
admin answers:
It may be more difficult but its never too late. I was fortunate and my cat snuggled up to my old golden retriever, sometimes they would even play together, now I have a beagle and they get along great too.
Something I tried was when they are around the cat, dont restrain them let them sniff them and the cats will probably run off but eventually the dog will smell them enough to be ok with them around and calm down. It also depends on the temperment of the husky. If he is socialized well this shouldnt be a problem. If you make a big fuss when they are meeting or when they are together- your dog will get the wrong impression so try and stay calm in the situation
Sometimes it helps to crate train the pup and then put the cat in the room- the dog has to sniff them through the cage so the cat will learn it cant do anything and come closer, the dog gets a good sniff when the cat comes close and it helps.
Dogs and cats are kinda trial and error, Cats have different memory types than dogs and if the dog bites them or chases them ALOT to the point of scaring them- they will remember it. If the cats are declawed its better for your house but can leave the kitty defenseless if the Husky does get to rough.
I wish I could give you more advice but Dogs and Cats really depend on the animals temperments.
Ive heard of some people using those “Plug ins” that smell like the mother’s phermones when they were puppies that calms them down but I dont know how well they work. You could ask your local pet store.
Just for future information its a lot easier if you have a kitten and a full grown dog- for some reason they take on the mother role- I guess cuz they look kinda like a puppy (not to us, but to them). That could have been part of why mine got a long too. The Retriever was full grown and the kitten slept a lot and was daring enough to meet the dog and snuggle him. Again all depends on their temperment and what they have been exposed to.
Best of Luck!!

Siberian Huskies Breeders

Who are the better siberian huskies breeders in Singapore?
I have been searching for a good breeder for a while now but couldn’t find any. Please tell me the website(if any) or as much info as possible about the breeder. In Singapore only, thanks.

You don’t really say whether you are an experienced husky owner or even dog owner. Please if you have never owned a husky before (they are different from other breeds) read, read and read some more before making a final decision. Here is a good place to start: http://www.siberianrescue.com/ and they also have a listing of rescues and breeders. If you are a first time owner I would like to suggest that you start by rescuing a mature dog – training these pups is a large, sometimes frustrating, responsibility and we see toooo many come through rescue yearly because people give up. Plus the #1 rule is that they require stringent containment as well as NEVER being off leash when outside of the fence. The upside of all this is that they are beautiful, loving, friendly, energetic, happy, smart, strong willed, cuddle bugs and should you fall in love with this breed there will be time for a puppy later. Most of us who are owned by a sibe have multiple furbabies and are completely addicted and obessive. If you don’t believe that then make your next question here to the sibe owners and take a survey. If you think of additional questions, please feel free to email me as I would rather help someone learn ahead of time then to find another one in a shelter or rescue. Good Luck!
Edit: A well bred husky is not going to be cheap but a rescue should be reasonable for the services you receive with most of them. However, if budget is a strong concern, then be careful as you should also have an emergency vet budget with any dog..

Husky Dog Food

What is the best kind of food for a Siberian Husky/ Australian Cattle dog mix?

admin answers:
Beneful is one of the worst foods on the market.
They even *advertise* the fact that it’s full of fillers. You watch a Beneful commercial, and they have ears of corn flying all around the screen.
Here are the ingredients:
Ground yellow corn, chicken-by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, beef tallow preserved with mixed-tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, Minerals (tricalcium phosphate, salt, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, manganese sulfate, copper sulfate, calcium iodate, sodium selenite), sugar, sorbitol, water, animal digest, phosphoric acid, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, dried peas, dried carrots, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, Vitamins [Vitamin E, Vitamin A, niacin, Vitamin B-12, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, biotin, thiamine mononitrate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), Vitamin D-3], added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2), DL-Methionine, glyceryl monostearate, garlic oil.
Yuck. Fillers, artificial colors, low quality ingredients, etc. And not a single whole meat in the top 5 ingredients!
Here is a review of Beneful dog food:
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/showproduct.php?product=69&cat=all
=== === ===
Read the ingredients on the food you buy. Go with a high quality dog food.
Here is my “short list” of rules when I am looking at dog ingredients:
1) When I chose a dog food, I chose one high meat content. I want to see preferably at least 2-3 out of the top 5 ingredients be meat or meat meal (first ingredient must be!).
2) I want to see higher quality grains, such as barley, brown rice, and oatmeal, instead of seeing wheat and corn. Or an alternative starch/carbohydrate such as potatoes or sweet potatoes.
3) I don’t want to see any byproducts.
4) I don’t want to see a lot of fillers.
5) I don’t want to see preservatives that are believed to be carcinogens (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin).
6) I don’t want to see artificial colorings such as the Red, Blue, and Yellow dyes.
7) I don’t want to see added sugars (sugar, corn syrup).
I don’t want to see mystery meats (meats identified only as “meat” or “poultry”.)
Here is an article about byproducts:
http://www.dogfoodproject.com/index.php?page=ingrd
And an article on what ingredients to avoid:

There is no single food that is “best”. For example, some dogs thrive on grain-free foods, while grain-free is too rich for other dogs.
What you want to find is the high-quality food that *your dog* does best on
Some GOOD foods are :
* Artemis – http://www.artemiscompany.com/
* California Natural – http://www.naturapet.com/brands/california-natural.asp
* Canidae – http://www.canidae.com/
* Chicken Soup – http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/
* EVO – http://www.naturapet.com/brands/evo.asp
* Fromm – http://www.frommfamily.com/
* Innova – http://www.naturapet.com/brands/innova.asp
* Merrick – http://www.merrickpetcare.com/
* Nature’s Variety – http://www.naturesvariety.com/
* Orijen – http://www.championpetfoods.com/orijen/orijen/
* Solid Gold – http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/
* Taste of the Wild – http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/
* Timberwolf Organics – http://timberwolforganics.com/
* Wellness – http://www.omhpet.com/wellness/
Or check this website for good foods: http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews/
(I recommend only feeding foods rated 4, 5, or 6 stars. Anything 3 stars or less, I would stay away from.)
—
Stay away from grocery stores brands. They are low-quality foods chalk full of fillers, preservatives, dyes, etc.. (Grocery store foods are those like Beneful, Old Roy, Alpo, Pedigree, etc.)
Beware “premium” foods. “Premium” does not mean good nutritionally, and is not a nutritionally high quality food. It has the same types of ingredients as grocery store foods, just a bit better quality of those not-so-good ingredients. (Premium foods are those like Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, etc..)
Another thing to be wary of: A lot of vets will recommend what they sell in their office. They get profit from the brands they keep on their shelves, that’s why they push it. Truth is, vet schools don’t focus a lot on nutrition. It’s not saying that a vet is a bad vet because he recommends those foods, a lot of vets just are told “this is good food”, so they pass the message along without proper nutrition knowledge. Also, some dog food brands (like Hills) support vet schools, so vets have heard of it from the time they start college, which makes them think it’s good as well.
—
Higher quality food may seem more expensive at first, but it evens out. The higher quality the food, the less fillers eaten (and therefore the less poop comes out the other end). Your dog eats more to try to get the nutrition it needs, and most of the food just passes right on through. Also, it will make your animals healthier, so you save money on vet bills in the long run.
—
“Big box” petstores like Petco and Petsmart rarely have quality foods. (I do believe that PetCo sells “Solid Gold” and “Natural Balance” brands and Petsmart sells “Blue Buffallo”, which are all quality foods, but most of the foods aren’t.)
Also, grocery stores and Walmart aren’t good places to buy food either.
Your best bets for getting quality dog food are:
- small, locally owned petstores
- dog boutiques
- farm supply stores
—
When switching foods, do it gradually. I do this over about a two week timespan:
25% food A, 75% food B
50% food A, 50% food B
75% food A, 25% food B
100% food A
.

BARF is actually the best food for any dog. It is human grade raw food made up of bones, meat and organ meat. You can buy it online. Read the ingredients on your dog food bag. You will find corn meal, rice meal and all kinds of nasty fillers and by products. Corn and rice are grains. A dogs digestive system is not made to digest grains. If you insist on buying commercial foods make sure the first 4-5 ingredients are real meat, not by product or grains. A dog can and will eat vegetables, they are healthy for a dog

Ours love to eat anything that doesn’t eat them first!
We feed 13 of ours Purina O. N. E. Or Pro Plan. They love it and are thriving on it. We will sometimes add a tablespoon or two of bacon grease or other meat drippings or even instant gravy to liven the food up for them. The drippings help their coats too. The 14th eats O. N. E. Canned food. She is 13 and has broken or lost a lot of her teeth. As a rule though Huskies will not over eat. They are not big eaters or fussy eaters. They will leave food in their bowl if you give them too much. You might want to talk to your vet or the breeder for more insight on this.
Do not feed any dog the “grocery” store or WalMart types of food. Meat should be the main ingredient. Also no corn, wheat etc. Many dogs have allergies to them.

admin answers:
The only reason a Siberian ever smells bad (other than after rolling in something nasty!) is because,
A) You live in a humid climate and haven’t dried them properly. They need to be dried with a blower, down to the skin…otherwise their coats will *never* be completely dry.
B) They have a yeast infection, allergy, or some other skin problem that is making them smell. Again this could be due to the humidity.
Siberians don’t have a “doggy” smell. They are a very clean breed. If your dog smells, you are doing something wrong.
There is no reason to bathe a Siberian more than once every few months, if that. Keeping them properly brushed out is much more important. I have 12 year old Siberians at home who have never had a bath in their lives!

He is an adult, and when i saw him he was a very nice dog:) But i just don’t know if my cats or if he would get along with my Cats. I have 3, they are All females. One of them is white, she is about a year and a half, the others are around 8 months old. But the white cat has been acting up lately, she’s been fighting and hitting my other cats, she Only does it at night though. She’s been like this for about 3 months now. I really don’t know why, and at day time she is scared of everything, and mostly everyone. I don’t know why either. Also the kittens have been with her since they were born, she took care of them when their mum ran away. So do you think they will get along (the 3 cats and the dog?)
I’ve been told that Siberian Huskies are “cat killers.” Is this true?
Thanks:)
By the way, I Love my cats very much, and so does my family, but I really want That dog.
ALSO HE IS NOT A PURE BREED.
He is mixed with German shepherd. Just encase you missed it.

Both the GSD and the husky has a high prey drive. I have a GSD but we got her as a puppy, so my cat and her get along fine.
The animal shelter should test all dogs and classify them as safe with children and other pets, or no other pets allowed. Phone them and ask them if they have done these tests. If they have not I think I would keep looking.
Once you have bonded with an animal it is hard to give them back, but you also don’t need ongoing problems.

Siberian Huskies and Cats?
I’ve wanted a siberian husky for as long as I can remember and now that I’m moving to a bigger house my dream of owning one may finally come true yippee!! The only problem is my cat, she’s five years old but she has the sweetest nature and she has never shown aggression towards any other animals before. I keep reading very mixed opinions on whether huskies and cats are a good idea so I was hoping someone could give me a straight answer. Thanks for reading!
- If I get a dog I would defiantly like one of the “wolf” variety but from what I’ve found out they all have the same tenancy to attack cats, if huskies are a no go could you recommend a breed that I might be interested in?

No matter what breed you decide on, it will have to be trained and socialized with a cat, no matter what breed.
so if your heart is set on a Huskey then get a Huskey, the myth that all these breeds will attack a cat is rubish, it is all in how the breed is trained and raised, and turn about, you have to train your cat also, but it is 5 yrs old and set its ways already, so a puppy is a good idea, raise them together and they will tolerate each other.
The wolf myth is just that, not all attack cats, my brother in Fairbanks, Alaska, has Alaskan Malumutes, trains, shows, breeds and handler, he has never had a problem, his wife is not a dog person, she has 5 Himalayan cats, the ones with great long beautiful coats, he has 2 of his dogs in the house as trained guard dogs, so when he travels his wife has protection, the pups were raised with her cats, mind you the cats at first did not take well, but finally after good socializing with all of them, they tolerate each other and even lay next to one another in the house,,,,,so you see the key word here is training and making sure it is done right,
dont settle for a dog you dont truly want, get the breed of your choice, but first research the breed and make sure it really fits your lifestyle….Huskies, are great dogs if trained correctly and great companion dogs…but do not like children that much, unless again properly trained with them,.
Breeder/show/handler 15 yrs Min. Schnauzers
I have 2 Akita’s also and they do fine with neighbors cats when we walk, but again train your dog correctly…

Mine is. But I have had him since he was 8 weeks old and he was raised with 6 cats. If you are adopting a older one…always becareful no matter what breed the dog is…you have to introduce them slowly. There are no garantees with an older dog.

Siberian Husky and cats?
I am thinking of adopting a siberian huskey that is 2 years old. I also have 5 cats. I have heard about the prey instincts of huskies and I am concerned about the safety of my cats. My cats are pretty tough. Is there any way this can work out?

A 2 year old husky might be a little difficult. Oppose to a puppy the husky would’ve grown up to love your cats as friends, not food. Here are questions to think about before you adopt: Does this dog like cats? Has it been around cats? Has it ever barked or tried to attack your cats? Also, when I adopted my dog, my cat didn’t appreciate my dog very much. She hates my dog and probably won’t ever like her, so just think about these things. When you bring the dog home first introduce them slowly and watch the dog and cats very closely it will be hard to tell if everything will work out. Good luck!

are siberian huskies bad dogs to have with cats?
I have always wanted to get a siberian husky. But am waiting until i have a house with a yard until i get one. I currently have a lab. but i also have a cat and i heard they are bad dogs to have with cats, that they will view them as “food”. Some guy told me a story of his friend who had one that grew up with the cat they got along fine, then one day he came home to the remnants of his dead cat.
What do you guys think?

If you get the dog as a puppy, you’re dominant, and you train/socialize the dog amazingly — it will be fine with cats; but, as you’ve heard, there will always be the possibility of the dog attacking the cat.
