How do you stop a husky from digging holes in the back yard?

I have a 2 yr old Husky who has been digging up my back yard, even exposing roots to some very old trees. I have tried red pepper flakes in the holes and he just waits until it rains and digs again or moves to another part of the yard and digs. Help!

Short of tieing him up somewhere else, there is nothing, He’s a dog, it’s his job!!!!
Don’t let him go in the back yard until he is 3-4 years of age. Huskies have the urge to dig holes in there younger years, because they come from a line of duty where your in the Antarctic and you must dig holes in the snow (Instincts are urging them). Your best bet is to let Him/Her stay in your house until He/She is a bit old. By that time your dog should be used to not digging holes and just enjoy the back yard for what it is. I wish you well, and your dog too.
I know this is easier said then done as everyone has a life. Keep him occupied in other ways. Take him to dog park and let him run himself till he is tired. He is only 2 and the hold digging will slow down as he gets older. Let him have 1 or 2 holes to lounge in and maybe that will help too.
Don’t leave your pet unattended. Duh?? Like kids they should be monitored.
He is bored. Go out there and play with him. Take him for a walk. Get him some type of stimuli that will grab his attention and keep it for a while. Good luck : )
First tire him out via a good long walk or a long play session, and do not leave him unattended for any length of time. Please tell me you are not tying him up outside or leaving him in the yard 24/7…
make a specific digging area… I use a sandbox with a lid to keep the “kitty treats” (poo) out. Bury toys and bones in it and train him that the box is the specific area to dig… (u can use a “dig command if u want).
Now about those old holes…. are there moles or chippy’s that are stimulating him to dig? You will need to address any rodent activity. Otherwise that is jusy normal husky behavior to bed down. Also, old holes can be backfilled with dirt and the dog’s poop, the dog may or may not re-dig there with his poop right there, but at least the yard will be clean and the holes filled, lol!
fill up the holes with his poop, sounds disgusting but it works, i’ve stopped many dogs from digging doing this!!!
Tie him up in the front yard…
Huskies dig holes instinctively to bed down in. They do this in the snow to curl up in and they cover their noses with their tails for warmth. Let the dog have one hole in a nice laying-down spot that you don’t fill in or cover up. It might prevent the digging of multple holes.
p.s. The husky that I had for 13 years was also the best escape artist in town–watch out for digging under the fence.
Well, this is what I heard from a friend…. Put a piece of poo in it’s favourite hole. I don’t really know if it works but who knows.
long walks….if you cant walk your husky invest in a tredmil lol…also try leaving one hole for the dog to lay in and putting rocks in the others..and if you have a fence try putting rocks around the fence edges..
Some of these answers just amaze me…
What you need to do is take the dogs waste and put it in the hole and put the dirt back in. When he goes back to dig again, he will come upon his waste and STOP. Seeings as how he is a dog and he’s acting like one — maybe you should built him a sandbox. We did that this past weekend and the dogs LOVE it….they are praised for digging there and scolded for digging elsewhere. No one loses!
