I’m planning to get a siberian husky and i’ve read up on crate training dogs, but i’m not sure how long to leave a siberian in the crate… how long do you leave your siberians in a crate?

Any puppy should never be left in for longer than 3 hrs without sufficient bathroom and play time…if you can’t provide a lunch time out then take your pup to doggie daycare about $9 daily……
I’m going to star this for my girl Ulva child. She has a Siberian Husky and may be able to help you out on this one…
Ask the rescue or the Vet that you should call before the dog comes home so you have an appt scheduled and won’t have to wait, she can get her hearworm test and if clean will get her monthly tabs, shots, check for worms and frontline for fleas if it’s old enough, no over the counter treatmens they can be fatal
Petstores have books about crate/potty training. Read up on it.
Puppies have to go usually every 2 to 3 hours. As they get older they can hold it longer.
Really, a book about it gives great tips and will ease alot of frustration that comes with potty training. And the puppy doesn’t deserve the results of an owners frustrations. So read up and be armed with knowledge!!
When crate training a dog consider this:
The size of the crate- if you are getting a husky, you will need a larger crate, but find one that is expandable. They usually have a piece in the back you can move back as the dog gets bigger. You don’t want the dog to have too much room, as he will go in the back of the crate to do his business.
Make sure the crate is never used for punishment. You dog she see the crate as a place of comfort.
As far as “leaving” him in a crate goes. When training you puppy, you should only expect the pup to hold it for as many hours as he is in months of age. SO if he is 3 months old, he can hold it for about 3 hours. As you continue your crating, you will eventually be able to leave him crated through out the night, and more extended periods of the day.
Crate training did wonders for my Aussie! Do your research on the method and you till will have success!
1-you need to get the largest crate you can, this is gonna be a big dog.
2-a puppy, well no longer than 2-3 hrs, babies cant hold it as long, as it gets larger, then 3-4 hrs…but no dog should just be left in a crate.
3-as soon as you get home, the dog needs to be out and a good walk, fed, and play time, to wear down for bedddie bye bye, and a good nights sleep, this goes for any breed, small or large.
a Husky needs lots of exercise and play time, they get bored really easy, are good dogs, and some like to jump fences, so be sure you have a good back yard, and until the dog is grown, I would supervise it, till trained and does not show signs of jumping the fence…and the last thing you want to do, is do not chain the dog up…..most dogs chained constantly will become aggressive.
good luck and congrats on your new baby, any names yet.
be sure, remember shots, worming, and Heart Guard Plus for life, this should be given starting at 4 mos of age and never miss a month, it protects against Heart Worms and Hook Worms…
my husky is 8 months old. i never used a crate because he was so attached to me, but now i have to because it helps him calm down. i usually leave him in for 2 hrs tops bcuz he needs to get out a move around a bit or get a drink. hes ALWAYS thirsty! it depends on ur plans but they do need atleast 20 mins. of there own calm down time.
The longest I have ever left mine was 4hours (at 6months).
As a young pup, anytime you can not watch him, CRATE HIM!!
A young pup should be supervised at all times,
i)You don’t know what he could be chewing on
ii)He could soil anywhere without you knowing
iii) will give you piece of mind that your pup is safe.
Crating Duration Guidelines
9-10 Weeks
Approx. 30-60 minutes
11-14 Weeks
Approx. 1-3 hours
15-16 Weeks
Approx. 3-4 hours
17 + Weeks
Approx. 4+ (6 hours maximum)
*NOTE: Except for overnight, neither puppies nor dogs should be crated for more than 5 hours at a time. (6 hours maximum!)
*The above durations where written by Robin Kovary*
When he is housebroken I still recommend use of the crate especially if your out.
Siberians are a working breed and get bored very easily.
They find ways of occupying themselves (this could be digging in the back garden or chewing on your new shoes) so It is best to crate/
Also a crate is a great and safe way to travel with your dogs.
Good luck!!
