My siberian husky Loki doesn’t like it when I go out and wet him down with water when it’s 105 degrees out. Does the water actually heat him up or what? I don’t want to hurt him or anything. I need help so answering would help me sooo much. Thanks infinite to those who answer.

water actually attracts a lot of ray from the sun and results in heat. its like if u go to the beach and swim for a while and then go lay out on the sand u will get a lot more sun burn. but if u lay in the sand before u swim u wont get as burned

I have a chow – during really hot times, I have her shaved so it’s not unbearable for her.

Getting the dog wet won’t hurt him, but huskies (like chows) generally don’t like water – so it just irritates him, even if it’s momentarily cooler. Check with your vet/groomer about having him shaved.

that amount of hair is there for a reason they are a cold weather dog check with the vet and see what they say about having him shaved for the summer we have collies in our area and they shave them every summer to keep them cooled off.call you vet

Maybe he just doesn’t care for being wet down at all. Most dogs don’t care for getting a bath, and your dog may associate this with a bath.

I understand the heat .. we’ve been about 105 most days lately too. Bring Loki inside. That’s just too hot for a dog with that kind of coat. He’ll be much happier – and safer – in the AC until the weather cools down.

I’m not sure if it will hurt him but i read it somewhere that it is bad going from hot to cold or vice versa. use warm water then cooler water so he can adapt the change

The water ends up weighing his coat down, and it starts to get hot.

you better off by getting him a shelter, like an igloo with vents, you can get them anywhere even a hardware store, they sometimes carry big dog igloos

or you could get him a kennel but most kennels arent made in the color white!

also, huskies are ment for the arctic cold, but you should never imeadiatly cool a dog down from being really hot, his body could go into shock

don’t shave the dog. They need their fur to keep warm and cool…dogs pant to keep cool.
If you want to wet him down go ahead. (dogs that don’t like water will never like water, even if it cools them off.) You might try giving him some ice cubes in his water..he might like that.
(dogs often like to chew ice and love ice water to drink, it cools them from the inside.)
He might like a shady place to lay, under some bushes, dig out some dirt till it feels cool, he’ll love that (but yeah it makes a mess of his fur..but dogs do love the cool earth)

Just give him water he’ll drink what he needs. In general this breed does not take heat too well.

He should not be outside when it is 105. Over 90-95 depending on the humidity he should be inside.

Check out the ASPCA and Humane Society for info on this. Also depending on where you live you may be violating humane animal laws keeping him out him. Check local laws. Where I live that would be a rather substantial fine and they would check back to see if he was taken in and kept inside in the heat.

I know you care for him so please don’t let him stay out in that heat.

    God Bless

Wetting him down won’t hurt him. His fur is SO thick it probably won’t hit much of his skin unless he goes swimming.
My friend had two keeshounds who have fur much like a husky. They hate water. He lives on a pond and they ride in his boat, but they refuse to go in the water! Maybe you should invest in an air conditioner and then both you and Loki will be comfortable!

buy your dog a kid swimming pool… many dogs enjoy playing in the water on hot days…
soak a rope toy in water then freeze it..

water as it evaporates does make one feel cooler.. so its ok to wet him – however make sure he has shade….if he has a pink nose – the combination of being wet and the sun can cuase him to burn his skin on his nose…

have a goomer “blow out” his coat to free any loose hair, or trim his hair.. (dont shave it.. the hair protects them from the heat)

I use to have a siberian husky named Loki too! I lived in Texas at the time and although I didnt hose him down he did have a kiddie pool in the shade (usually on the covered porch) that he’d go in and cool off. In fact I cant remember a time when I didnt have a kiddie pool for my dogs in the summer months regardless of breed. I now live in ND for the last 2 yrs and although its not “Texas hot” it can get warm for my dogs (black lab, brittany spaniel and boxer-pit mix) and they too have a pool and the love it!! And all are healthy and happy

Do not shave your dog it can cause sun burn so get a pool at walmart you can get the smallest size for under 8 dollars. Get the plastic ones not the blow up kind obviously

I personally shave my dogs during the summer. I don’t shave them down to the skin but I do take off a good amount. My females love it! They are more playful and happier. Neither of them likes water forced on them from the hose however they like to lay in the water in kiddie pooIs. I agree with the comments regarding the dog should be in the house on days when it’s that hot.

  13. Val says:

Dogs sweat through their paws and by panting, so the best way to cool them off is have a kiddie pool in the shade for them to keep cool.

Do not shave a husky. You will ruin their coat and it will not grow back in right. The fur helps to insulate them in the cold as well as the heat. They do adapt to the heat just as they do in the cold.

Wet a towel and freeze it. Once frozen, give it to your dog to play with. Mine rolls on it to help cool himself down.

No, the water won’t hurt him. He probably just doesn’t like it. My Sibe hates water.
Please don’t shave him!! Siberians have a double coat for good reason. If you shave the dog you will run the risk of sunburn and/or heatstroke. They can die from this. Their coats insulate them from cold and heat as well!
If it’s over 90 degrees the dog should be kept inside. It’s just too darn hot out there. My Sibe does enjoy sitting out and sun basking though. =) We live in Northern Florida and it gets HOT here too.
You could try a kiddie pool. He may not like water being sprayed on him, but may enjoy splashing in the pool!
Try ice cubes as well. Mine loves munching on them.
I’m glad you care about your Husky! It’s always nice to see responsible pet owners!
