Fun with Frankie, our Siberian Husky

Fun at the beach with Frankie, our purebred Siberian Husky, at Spanish Banks in Vancouver BC Canada. We had acquired her only three months before this was shot in the summer of 2007. At that time she was five years old. I’ve heard some horror stories of Huskies running away as soon as they get out of their yard (and/or are off-leash), but we seemed to have lucked out with Frankie. She bonded with us very quickly. She is a big part of the family now, for sure! Frankie has been a sweetheart from day one, and as you can plainly see in the video, she is wonderful with the kids. We got a Husky because I’m allergic to most dogs. However, I don’t react at all to Huskies or Malamutes. I’ve always loved the way these dogs looked, so it’s a win-win situation for me! * Kudos to YouTube for now allowing High Quality versions of video to be uploaded. If anyone watching this video has only seen the default low-quality version, please click on the “HQ” link to the lower right of the video window. This will look and sound a heck of a lot better! (A high-speed connection probably works best.)

very good video
Oh, huskies are “unique” all right. Very independent dogs.
Thanks for the compliments. Yes, Frankie seems to be very happy around us. And we’re very happy to be around her!
Your memories of her will last forever. That’s got to be worth at least a million dollars to you.
Thank you for posting and sharing your story of Maya.
(( i just noticed, you’ll have to read from my first post, which is ”under” a few to make sense ))))
helped me leash her back. I was so happy.
That was oddly, my most favourite and memorable memories with my husky.
We did have to give her up due to some family issue not related with the dog. And I cried for many nights after.
I would pay a million bucks just to have her again.
sorry for the long post…..thank you.
Then I was getting tired and I noticed she kept looking back at me while she was running. Then a thought came to me. Why don’t I run and make her chase me….lol. So when we went kinda in a circle and were a block away from home, I waited till she looked back then, I called her name, and ran home slowly.
OMG, then she actually ran back to me. But she still didn’t let me leash her back, she just ran around me. She then ran into a neighbors yaard and we closed the gates and they helped me
> continued from my last post:
Well, the story is.
One day I was walking her, and she saw a squirrel and well, of course, she tried to chase it, and she slipped out of the leash which was loose. I was like OMG freaking out. Very fortunetely was that we were in a neighborhood away from large streets.
The squirrel got away and she kept running and jumped on a woman gardening. the woman freaked out, lol, kinda funny. Then i continued chasing her for about 1 block.

COOL. I live in Vancouver, BC too. AND I’m a Canucks fan too!! did you watch the game last night, they tried there best, they played well.
AND I also ‘had’ a husky too. her name was Maya. Her markings were pretty much like your but she had a clearer triangular white area on her forehead. Her collour was light grey and white. And she had beautiful ice blue eyes. Literally, they were very light blue. She was only 1 when I got her.
I’ll tell you a story in the continued comment about her >
I’ve always wanted a husky & specially with Frankie’s color
) I love all dogs, but huskies are so unique !!!
)
She’s such a beautiful dog, good luck with her, she seems so happy around you guys
I wish i can have one soon, right now i have a pregnant cat called Bella ^_^
Yes they’re beautiful, but huskies are strange critters as well. I have NO regrets getting a husky, but they are rather independent to say the least. They definitely have minds of their own! One moment they can be acting like a regular dog, then suddenly they’re a husky again. I guess “aloof” would describe it pretty good. It’s like they have a switch of some sort that can quickly toggle on or off. As long as you don’t require a dog that worships you 24/7, huskies can be wonderful companions.
ya he seems happy. Thanks I’ll look into that collar when the pup grows up a little more.
Good advice on not being abusive with the electric shock.
(Continued from last post.) I want emphasize that the electric collar was only used with extreme discretion, normally at a very low setting. What you see in this video is a dog who enjoys engaging with us, not a dog thats afraid of the consequences of being disobedient. I hope everyone seeing my video and reading this can appreciate the difference. We love Frankie, and from everything we’ve observed, Frankie loves us!
Keep in mind we got Frankie when she was already five years old, so I have no idea what kind of training she may have received when she was younger. We used a remote control electric collar for a short time when we first got her, just to “remind” Frankie if necessary that she should respond to our command to WAIT if she was about to endanger herself while off-leash. Everyone in the family, kids included, got a taste of what a shock from the collar would feel like. (Continued in next post.)
so there was nothing you guys did to train your husky not to run away? I am trying to do the same with my husky pup but I am nervous. Any tips would rock!
cute dog, ive always wanted a husky
Good luck. Perhaps we’ll be seeing a video of YOUR new Husky in the near future!
Thank-you for your kind words. The amazing thing about Frankie’s relationship with our family is that she bonded very quickly with us even though we got her as a five year old adult. I have to admit I was very nervous about letting her off-leash the very first time we did it, but she really does seem to enjoy being around us. A friend of mine who has had various Huskies and Malamutes over the years believes that the females are more loyal than males. There may be some truth to that observation.
I heard that too about the females. My 5 year old son already has a name picked out LOL. We’ll see – I still have to repair the fence first (just incase)
ever since my first though of a huskie as my family’s first dog someone told me to do my research .. i’m on my 2nd book and everyone says “they will run away”. Your Frankie sure doesn’t seem like there is anywhere she’s going to go besides right there with your family. I have to believe that has something to do with how they are raised to some extent. Anyway, i’m babbling… you have an amazing husky – she’s beautiful !!
